While the message of the Bible remains the same, different insights may add new light. In this commentary attempt is made to interact with the text of the letters of John, especially as we have it in the Greek New Testament. The meaning of the word is not seen as the end but only as the basis upon which to relate the message to the present needs of the church. The church is both guardian of truth and instrument of love.In our times, with so many displaced persons, hospitality is increasingly becoming an aspect of Christian love the church cannot run away from. These are matters that this book calls attention to, as they are raised by the biblical text itself. I am grateful to others who have also given their time and energy in providing their insights on the same epistles. May the Lord use all the efforts to build a strong church for our time and many years to come!Katho's experience growing up in a war-torn land gives him a unique perspective on how Jeremiah's words relate to our world in turmoil today. A one-volume commentary, written and edited by South Asian Biblical scholars on all the books of the Bible. Evans, summarizes and briefly analyzes all recent and many older commentaries on each book of the Bible, giving insightful comments on the approach of each commentary and its interpretive usefulness especially for evangelical interpreters of the Bible.A Guide to Biblical Commentaries and Reference Works is essentially an annotated bibliography of hundreds of commentators. The author keeps up on the publication of commentaries and intends to update this book every three to four years.Named one of the top religion books of by USA Today, Philip Jenkins's phenomenally successful The Next Christendom permanently changed the way people think about the future of Christianity. In that volume, Jenkins called the world's attention to the little noticed fact that Christianity's center of gravity was moving inexorably southward, to the point that Africa may soon be home to the world's largest Christian populations. Now, in this brilliant sequel, Jenkins takes a much closer look at Christianity in the global South, revealing what it is like, and what it means for the future. The faith of the South, Jenkins finds, is first and foremost a biblical faith. Indeed, in the global South, many Christians identify powerfully with the world portrayed in the New Testament--an agricultural world very much like their own, marked by famine and plague, poverty and exile, until very recently a society of peasants, farmers, and small craftsmen. In the global South, as in the biblical world, belief in spirits and witchcraft are commonplace, and in many places--such as Nigeria, Indonesia, and Sudan--Christians are persecuted just as early Christians were. Thus the Bible speaks to the global South with a vividness and authenticity simply unavailable to most believers in the industrialized North. More important, Jenkins shows that throughout the global South, believers are reading the Bible with fresh eyes, and coming away with new and sometimes startling interpretations. Some of their conclusions are distinctly fundamentalist, but Jenkins finds an intriguing paradox, for they are also finding ideas in the Bible that are socially liberating, especially with respect to women's rights.Across Africa, Asia, and Latin America, such Christians are social activists in the forefront of a wide range of liberation movements. It's hard to overstate how interesting, how eye-opening, how frequently surprising and sometimes disturbing Jenkins' findings are. Anyone interested in the implications of these trends for the major denominations, for Muslim-Christian conflict, and for global politics will find The New Faces of Christianity provocative and incisive--and indispensable. It's purpose is for the inspiration and motivation of members for engaging in evangelism and outreach ministry services. Each chapter ends with "Reflection Questions"; and each workbook of the 3 ends with a corresponding summary in Black Church History congruent to an excerpt from The Acts of the Apostles. In our increasingly xenophobic world, countries are turning away refugees and immigrants. Based on the situation in Kenya, this book offers a countercultural ethic of hospitality and welcome to the stranger, an ethic fraught with dangers and yet filled with great opportunities for transforming our world.Drawing on the scriptural pilgrim motif and specifically on the book of Hebrews, this study paints a picture of refugees not only as needy strangers to be herded into camps, but as brothers and sisters who bring with them treasures and talents that can enrich our understanding of our Christian identity and mission as pilgrims in the world. Many of the analogies and stories in western study Bibles have little to no relevance to cultures in Africa. Our Supervising Editor Dr. John Jusu shares its importance through the following story:. John Jusu, a young man at the time, was listening to him with curiosity. John had no idea what a vending machine was, and he was certain that neither did any of the gathered people.John looked around again. This was a village that could only be reached only by footpaths. John began to wonder if this preacher even knew the meaning of the comparisons that he was making. That is why the Africa Study Bible is so necessary. This Bible will be the first study Bible that features African pastors and scholars writing for the African experience. The Africa Study Bible will allow people like this village preacher to teach the Bible more easily because they will have access to illustrations that resonate with daily life. We made a deliberate effort to use both positive and negative proverbs so people could learn to evaluate perspectives from a Christian worldview. This is not meant to put down any culture, tribe or nation. See the explanation on page A John Jusu, Supervising Editor, read every note. However, all other proofreaders and editors only worked on particular parts of the project by book and section not by nationality or area. It would not have been possible to divide editors by region as they needed to work on full sections and subjects. See further explanation on page A26 of the Africa Study Bible. Share on Facebook.
